64 players

The Project

A corrupted AI threatened all Internet. A small group of scientists managed to find its origin, in the world of Golden Opportunity 3 and decided to reunite a group of 64 intrepid players to stop the danger that lured over the world. Nine weeks facing all kind of adversities until fixing the malicious code of this AI.

Golden Opportunity 3 was a semi-hardcore series with weekly missions to obtain points, which could be lost when dying. At the end of each week, the AI eliminated the players with the smallest score. Furthermore, the difficulty increments, the custom items, the exclusive mechanics and the new mobs made this series one of the KILAM's best creations to date. The exploration of the new dimensions and the most challenging puzzles turned Golden Opportunity 3 into one of the most intense challenges that the participants have ever played.

Story

Years ago, an AI was being developed aiming to help all Minecraft players with their daily chores. But a sporadic launch caused the files to start corrupting, and the AI creator lost control of it. The corrupt artificial intelligence started to expand across all the Internet, entailing a world wide danger beyond the Minecraft videogame. A small group of scientists detected the anomaly and went into the world that registered the most activity: the Golden Opportunity 3 world. After a while of studying corruption and the artificial intelligence, they concluded that they alone could not stop it. Therefore, they called 64 players to keep it at bay while the scientist team kept their research going. However, the player files with the least amount of relevant activity in the world (reflected in the form of points) would be detected as foreign and deleted permanently by the AI.

At some point during the series, the players took the decision to try to fix the malicious code, and everybody gave their best, week after week until the scientist team could finally find a cure. In an epic final event, susarro72, DasuMC and Feliibeltran managed to get to the depths of the corrupted code and restore the AI to a harmless state.

Events

In order to keep the series active, at the end of every week, players would face a new thematic event: explorations, minigames, battles...

Classic videogame recreations: Donkey Kong, Crash Team Racing and Bomberman. One of the most striking and differentiative events from all the series.

For The End opening, the stronghold from Minecraft Dungeons was recreated block by block, along with the main models and creatures. After passing through this structure and defeating the bosses, The End became accesible, and a battle against a more powerful dragon awaited.

There were several exploration and adventure events, always in the new environments. From very dangerous dimensions and caves to ruined servers in Minecraft Bedrock and older Minecraft Java versions.

The final event to defeat the AI consisted of four phases. First, a corrupted manifestation attacked the players in their base. Then, they were teleported to different emblematic scenarios from the series while they fought special creatures. After that, in a minigame and parkour phase, several players would be eliminated until only three were left standing. During the last phase, the survivors could face directly the artificial intelligence.

Dimensions and structures

Each dimension in GO3 was designed to serve a purpose. Although the overworld suffered the least modifications, the corrupted chunks and custom generation made the exploration much more interesting.

The Nether didn't have a roof and featured an increased maximum build height, plus it was filled with new structures where players could find different useful objects. Similarly, in The End, the difficulty of the creatures and the interest of the structures made the exploration a more intense experience.

Besides the usual dimensions, Golden Opportunity 3 had two totally new dimensions: Domo and Fusuru. The first one was an amalgamation of colourful biomes in a grid with the most corrupted mobs in the series. In this dimension there were some towers where people could retrieve locked inventory slots. Meanwhile, Fusuru was a frozen dimension with ice columns floating in the void and some small islands and structures, from which heart fragments could be obtained.

Mobs

A great part of the difficulty from Golden Opportunity resided in its mobs and bosses. For this reason, we invested a lot of effort into designing them, so fighting them was hard but rewarding. From creatures that complemented perfectly the aesthetic of the different dimensions to bosses such as The Entity, that was generated by building a shrine and posed an extreme fighting challenge. Moreover, the event bosses were designed with precision depending on the progress of the series, the area atmosphere and the context of the fight.

Gameplay

There were difficulty changes every week. These changes added new objects, new crafting recipes and new challenges to face during the following days.

In order to keep the activity in the series, we also developed weekly missions: hard challenges that complemented difficulty changes and gave points when completed. The overall score was what dictated who continued in the series and who got eliminated.

Moreover, every week there was a new research mission. These consisted of a series of puzzles in ARG format (Alternate Reality Game) format that provided some kind of advantage to the players when completed, apart from giving points to the first players to obtain the solution.
